Chantry Island Lighthouse & Tours

Accessible only by tourboat, Chantry Island sits about a kilometre off the shore of Southampton. The lighthouse is a sister to the one at Point Clark, but take note of the subtle differences. Chantry Island, for instance, has 106 steps to the top.

Tours to this lighthouse must be pre-booked and pre-paid; only sanctioned tour groups are allowed on the island. Pre-book to avoid disappointment.

Where and When to Arrive:

Come to the Chantry Island Tour Base and Gift Shop located at the south side of the Saugeen River at the harbour in Southampton (See Maps) and arrive 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled tour. Check in and receive your ticket. You will be directed to the dock for the Peerless II.

The tour is much like a medium hike and requires a degree of agility and fitness. You can enjoy the tour without climbing the 106 steps in the Lighthouse tower. However, when you do reach the light room, you will always remember the view. For safety, children must be a minimum of 4 feet tall and must be accompanied by an Adult. Footwear suitable for hiking is mandatory. For safety reasons, Flip-Flops are not allowed. Also note: The 2 hour tour must be pre-booked and prepaid. There are 9 seats on the boat.

The cost is $30.00 per person (includes HST).

For refunds, cancellations must be received 24 hours before the scheduled departure. Chantry Island is a Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary and No Pets are allowed on the island. Cancellation can be caused by weather conditions but light rain is fine. No smoking in the boat or on the island.

Group tours can be booked by calling ahead at 1-866-797-5862 or 519-797-5862.

For Scheduled Tour times, please go here.

From Highway 21 in Southampton, turn west on Clarendon and follow the signs, or From High Street, (the main street), turn north on Huron or Grosvenor Streets and look for the signs.

Greig's Caves

Enjoy your self-guided exploration of 10 limestone caves in the peace and tranquillity of singing birds and rustling leaves along the rugged trails where scenes of Quest for Fire and Against the Wild were filmed, all in about a hour or two, but come prepared with GOOD hiking shoes with a good tread, as the rocks may be moist and slippery. You will also need a flashlight for some parts of the caves.

Binoculars will be a good idea to get a better view from the trail above the caves affords breathtaking views about 300 feet above the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay. Very important also is to have comfortable clothing when climbing around the caves.

Please be advised that when exploring Greig’s Caves, you travel the property at your own risk.

Unfortunately, due to the steep inclines and rocky terrain, the caves are not accessible for a person with mobility impairment or physical challenges. The hike does require some physical agility and balance.
